Windows 95 Dialup Networking Setup
Before You Start
Obviously if your already connected these instructions are usless to the
computer you are using. Nevertheless the less, you may print them out
for future reference in case your computer is reloaded and have lost your
settings.
You must have a modem connected to a working, analog (normal household)
telephone line and have Windows configured to recognize your modem. If
you have an external modem, turn it on. For more information, see the
documentation that came with your modem.
Have your Windows System CD or diskettes available, in the event you are
prompted for them.
Print this document for reference during software installation.
Close this program before you begin software installation.
Close all other programs.
Install Dialup Networking
Click the Windows Start button, click Settings, and click
Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
An Add/Remove Programs Properties window appears. Click the Windows Setup
tab located near the top of the window (see figure below).
Click the Communications item once to highlight it, and click the Details
button.

A Communications window appears (see figure below). The
item at the top of the list called Dialup Networking must have a checkmark
in the checkbox next to it:
If the item is checked, click the Cancel button and skip to the next section
in this document, Configure Network Control Panel.
If the item is not checked, click the Dialup Networking checkbox to place
a checkmark there, and click OK.

Note: Windows may ask for the Windows System CD at this point. If it does,
and if you have the Windows CD, insert it into the CDROM drive, and
type D:\Win95 or D:\Win98 (where D: is the letter of your CDROM drive) into the the
Copying Files dialog box that appears, and click OK. If Windows asks
for the Windows CD and you do not have it, then type into the Copying
Files dialog box, alternately as needed, either of the following: C:\Windows\Options\Cabs; C:\Windows\System;
or C:\Windows, clicking OK each time. If Windows
still cannot find the files it needs, you may need to end this process,
locate your Windows System CD, and start the process again from the
beginning.

The Add/Remove Programs Properties window reappears. Click
OK.
If you are not prompted with a message to provide computer and workgroup
names, restart your computer now and skip to the next section in this
document, Configure Network Control Panel.
If you are prompted with a message to provide computer and workgroup names,
click OK and continue with the next step, below.
A Network window appears (see figure below). Click the Identification
tab near the top of the window, and click in the Computer Name field.
Type username plus 95 or 98 or ME, with no spaces, into the Computer Name
field; for example, if your username is bill and your computer is running
windows 98 then it would be bill98. Fill in the remaining two fields with
information relative to your working environment (values shown should
work just fine in almost all cases).
Click OK.
If prompted to restart the computer, do so; if not, restart
the computer by clicking Start, Shut Down, selecting Restart, and confirming
your choice.
Configure Network
Control Panel
Note: This section of the document is one of the areas in which the differences
between Windows versions may become apparent. The steps and/or screen
shots contained in this section may differ greatly from those you
encounter with your version of Windows.

Click the Windows Start button, click Settings,
and click Control Panel.
Double-click the Network icon.
A Network window appears, with any installed network components listed
(see figure below).
Install Dialup Adapter
If there is an item in the list of installed
components called Dialup Adapter, then skip to the next section in this
document, Install TCP/IP for Dialup Adapter.
If there is not an item in the list of installed components called Dialup
Adapter, then click the Add button in the Network window. A Select
Network Component Type window appears (see figure below).
Click the Adapter item once to highlight it, and click the Add button.

A Select Network Adapters window appears (see figure below). Click the
Microsoft item in the section on the left called Manufacturers.
Click the Dial-Up Adapter item in the section on the right called Network
Adapters.
Click OK.

The Network window reappears, with a Dialup Adapter item
added.
Install
TCP/IP for Dialup Adapter
Extra Note: There should only be one TCP/IP item per communications adapter in
Network Control Panel. For instance, if you have only a modem in your
computer, and do not have a network (Ethernet) card, there should
be a total of one TCP/IP item in Network Control Panel. If you have
both a modem and a network card in your computer, there should be
a total of two: one TCP/IP item for the modem ("TCP/IP
-> Dialup Adapter"), and one for the network card
("TCP/IP -> [network card name]"). (America
On-Line users may also see an item called TCP/IP-> AOL
Adapter.) Having more than one TCP/IP item per communications
adapter causes difficulties connecting to the Internet.

If there is an item in the list of installed components
called TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter,
then skip to the next section in this document, Install
Client for Microsoft Networks.
If there is not an item in the list of installed components
called TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter,
then click the Add button in the Network window. A Select Network Component
Type window appears (see figure below).
Click the Protocol item once to highlight it, and click the Add button.
A Select Network Protocol window appears
(see figure below). Click the Microsoft item in the section on the left
called Manufacturers.
Click the TCP/IP item in the section on the right called
Network Protocols.
Click OK.
The Network window reappears, with a TCP/IP or TCP/IP->Dialup Adapter item added.
Install Client for Microsoft
Networks
If there is an item in the list of installed components
called Client for Microsoft Networks, then skip to the
next section in this document, Remove Unneeded Items.
If there is not an item in the list of installed components called Client
for Microsoft Networks, then click the Add button in the Network
window. The Select Network Component Type window appears (see figure below).
Click the Client item once to highlight it, and click the Add button.

The Network window reappears, with a Client for Microsoft Networks item added
Remove Unneeded Items (OPTIONAL)
If any of the items in the list below appears in the list
of installed components in the Network window, you may remove it by highlighting
each item in turn and clicking the Remove button (see figure below for
illustration).

Client for Netware Networks
IPX/SPX-compatible protocol
NetBEUI
Microsoft Family Logon
Create Dialup Networking Telephone
Number Icons
Double-click the Windows My Computer icon, and double-click Dial-Up Networking.
If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking,
a Welcome To Dial-Up Networking Wizard appears. To step through the Wizard,
click the Next or Finish buttons, as available, to accept the defaults.
When prompted, supply the requested information for the Wizard, i.e.,
icon name, area code, and phone number.
If this is not the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, no wizard
appears. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
In the Make New Connection window (see figure), replace the words "My
Connection" with a descriptive phrase, ie, Altazip.
Click Next.

Fill in the Area Code and Telephone Number fields with 896-2839, and click Next.

Click Finish.
You have now completed the dialup networking
connection profile, you may drag this new Altazip icon to your desktop
for easy dialup access. it will ask you if it can make a shortcut. Click
Yes
